Ядро концепта “three”: one more than two, or seven less than ten. [8, с. 1452]

Актуальный слой концепта “three”: Три первичных цвета: красный, зеленый, синий (three primary colours, primary colour – any of the colours red, green, and blue, or (for pigments) red, blue, and yellow, from which all other colours can be obtained by mixing). [8, с. 1085]

The three golden balls – вывеска или лавка ростовщика (Три шара были изображены на гербе семьи Медичи. “Well, Ross, you have the makings of a detective. The man that we seek is new to the city and will not know the Flower Street, Fullwood’s Rents or any of the more esoteric corners where you boys find trouble for yourselves. He will go to the most obvious place and the symbol of the three golden balls is known throughout the world” [3, с. 40].

The three Rs – reading, writing, arithmetic, regarded as the fundamentals of learning. The three tailors of Tooley Street – небольшая группа людей, провозглашающих себя представителями всего народа. We the people of England … .

Trinity; The Three Wise Men – Magi, three wise men who came from the East to worship the baby Jesus; Three Theological Virtues (теологические добродетели): faith, hope and charity.

The fatal (the 3) sisters – мойры, парки (три сестры, богини человеческой судьбы, в греческой мифологии назывались мойры, в римской – парки). Three furies (Resentful, Relentless and Avenger) Three Graces (Splendor, Mirth, and Good Cheer, or Beauty, Gentleness and Friendship). The Three Golden Apples – золотые яблоки Гесперид, которые должен был украсть Геракл.

“It must give us three guesseses, my preciouss, three guesseses.” [5, с. 103]

“I will ask you three things. Things that are a matter of public record. When I leave here, I will be able to check what you tell me. If I find you have told me the truth about them, I will accept the commission.” Писательница понимает, что число вопросов не случайно, так как три – магическое число, она не сможет снова солгать о своем прошлом: “Ah, the rule of three … . The magic number. Three trials before the prince wins the hand of the fair princess. Three wishes granted to the fisherman by the magic talking fish. Three bears for Goldilocks and Three Billy Goats Gruff. Miss Lea, if you had asked me two questions or four I might have been able to lie, but three …” Писательнице приходится ответить на все вопросы, потому что сказочное «правило трех» нельзя нарушить: “I would sooner not tell you. But I have promised, haven’t I? The rule of three. It’s unavoidable. The wizard might beg the boy not to make a third wish, because he knows it will end in disaster, but the boy will make a third wish and the wizard is bound to grant it because it is in the rules of the story. You asked me to tell you the truth about three things, and I must, because of the rule of three. But let me first ask you something in return.”

“So it bothered me, that night of the pitch-black sky, to find that I’d knitted a second heel. Once I’d done it and lost my young man. Twice and I’d lost my sister. Now a third time. I had no one left to lose. There was only me now … Twice before I had knitted two heels into a sock, and death had come close to me. The third time, and it was life that came to the door. That taught me not to go reading too much into coincidences. I had no time to be thinking about death after that, anyway.” [4]

Р.Р. Толкиена число три тоже приносит удачу главному герою: “I have got you out of two messes already, which were hardly in the original bargain, so that I am, I think, already owed some reward. But ‘third time pays for all’ as my father used to say, and somehow I don’t think I shall refuse.” [5, с. 258] “Come, come!” he said. ‘While there’s life there’s hope!’ as my father used to say, and ‘Third time pays for all.’ I’m going down the tunnel once again. I have been that way twice, when I knew there was a dragon at the other end, so I will risk a third visit when I’m no longer sure. Anyway the only way out is down. And I think this time you had better all come with me.” [5, с. 283]

1) 1913 E.M. Wright Rustic Speech 215. That if three people take part in making up a bed there is sure to be a death in the house within the year, is a superstition which I found was held to in my own house. [7, с. 16]

2) 1935 Girl, 12 [Poole, Dorset] Three times a bridesmaid, never a bride. 1953 Girl, 13 [Ipswich, Suffolk] If you are a bridesmaid more than three times you will never get married. [7, с. 45]

3) 1851 N&Q Ist ser. III 4 [Northants.] Omens of death and misfortune are … drawn from… the sight of a trio of butterflies. 1893 N&Q 8th ser. IV 165-6. A correspondent informs me that it is considered an omen of misfortune in Northamptonshire if three butterflies are seen together. [7, c. 51]

4) 1906 N&Q 10th ser. VI 509. A few months since an Irish girl hastily blew out a candle placed near two others on her toilet table, saying ‘Three bring death.’

8) 1923 Folklore 155 [Glos., c. 1890] Hallowe’en ... . Three plates were set out at one end of the room, one containing gold, another a ring, the third a thimble. The children walked up to them blind-folded and took the contents of the first plate they touched, which signified respectively a rich marriage, an early marriage ... and no marriage. [7, c. 121]

9) 1923 [Ruishton, Som.] If three unmarried people who have the same Christian names meet at table, one of them will be married within the year. [7, c. 277]

10) 1909 M. Trevelyan Folk-Lore of Wales 267. People formerly said if you wanted your children to attain a long age, you should see that the godparents come from three different parishes. [7, c. 298]

Ядро концепта “seven”: one more than six, or three less than ten; the sum of four units and three units. [8, c. 1269]

Актуальный слой концепта “seven”: Семь цветов спектра (seven colours of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet; Richard of York Gained Battles in Vain), магическое число Миллера (объем оперативной памяти человека), число дней недели, нот в музыке, количество первичных запахов стереохимической теории (камфарный, мускусный, цветочный, мятный, эфирный (эфироподобный), едкий и гнилостный). Gold, Silver, Iron, Mercury, Tin, Copper, Lead.

The seven wonders of the world – seven buildings and monuments regarded in antiquity as specially remarkable [8, c. 1269]. “Then you shall know her,” said Steerforth, “for she is one of the seven wonders of the world. When Miss Mowcher comes, show her in” [2, c. 280]. The eighth wonder of the world – восьмое чудо света. The seven seas – the oceans of the world: the Arctic, Antarctic, North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, and Indian Oceans [8, c. 1269]. The city of seven hills – Rome. The seven stars – Большая Медведица (the Big Dipper). The seven sages of Greece or seven wise men – seven wise Greeks of the 6th century BC. (Master of Arts). Seven Wisdoms – seven sciences of the Middle Ages (arithmetic, engineering, music, astronomy, nature, divinity, and political science).

The seven deadly sins (or the seven vices) – семь смертных грехов: pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, sloth. The seven virtues – семь добродетелей: chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, humility. Оскар Уальд использует данный фразеологизм в одном из своих парадоксов, заменяя слово sins на virtues, и тем самым создает очень интересный оксюморон: “In old days nobody pretended to be a bit better than his neighbour. In fact, to be a bit better than one’s neighbour was considered excessively vulgar and middle class. Nowadays, with our modern mania for morality, everyone has to pose as a paragon of purity, incorruptibility, and all the other seven deadly virtues. And what is the result? You all go over like ninepins – one after the other” [6, c. 7]. The seven rites of baptism, confirmation, the Eucharist, penance, anointing of the sick, ordination, and matrimony. Seven sleepers – семь спящих отроков эфесских (in early Christian legend) seven noble Christian youths of Ephesus who fell asleep in a cave while fleeing from the Decian persecution and awoke 187 years later. Seven species – seven types of crops mentioned in the Bible as the praised crops of Israel (wheat, barley, vines, fig, pomegranate, olives, oil, honey). В Библии число семь также считалось символом мудрости: “Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars” [Old Testament, Proverbs 9:1].

The Seven Sisters – уст.

Seven ages of man.

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players,
They have their exits and entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.

1) Bus tickets. 1952 Woman, c. 40. In Hull as a schoolgirl the rhyme ‘One for sorrow, two for joy’, going up to seven, was always applied to the numbers on tram tickets. The number was added up and divided by seven and the rhyme applied to the figure remaining. 1954 Boy, 12 [Southwark, London]. If the last number of the ticket is a seven you are going to have a lucky day. [7, c. 50]

2) 1895 J. Hardy Denham Tracts 273. It is a belief … in the North of England ... that the seventh son ... is destined to be a skilful and eminent physician … . If the seventh daughter appeared in uninterrupted succession, she was to be a witch. [7, c. 347]

3) Breaking a mirror leads to seven years of bad luck.

Ядро концепта “nine”: one morethan eight, or one less than ten; the sum of five units and four units. [8, c. 920]

The Nine Worthies – девять знаменитых людей античности и Средневековья, традиционно подразделяемые на три триады: Pagans: Hector (Гектор), Alexander the Great (Александр Македонский), Julius Caesar; Old Testament Jews: Joshua (Иисус Навин), David (Давид), Judas Maccabeus (Иуда Маккавей), Chivalric Christian Heroes: King Arthur, Charlemagne (Карл Великий), Godfrey of Bouillon (Готфрид Бульонский).

A cat of nine tails – ист. The ninth part of a man – уст. портняжка (происходит от выражения nine tailors make a man; tailors, искаженное tellers, удары колокола при погребении). The Curse of Scotland, the Nine of Diamonds – «проклятие Шотландии», девятка бубен (этимология с достоверностью не установлена.

The Nine Muses. Shakespeare’s sonnet 38: Be thou the tenth Muse, ten times more in worth

Than those old nine which rhymers invocate.

1) A cat has nine lives – кошки живучи (по английскому народному поверью у кошки девять жизней). A cat with nine lives – живучий человек, живуч как кошка. Have as many lives as a cat (have nine lives like a cat, have more lives than a cat) – отличаться поразительной живучестью. “1595 Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet III i. Good King of Cats, nothing but one of your nine lives” [7, c. 62]. “Bless the little dog!” exclaimed my aunt, “if he had as many lives as a cat, and was on the point of losing ‘em all, he’d bark at me with his last breath, I believe!” [2, c. 595]

2) 1941 F. Thompson Over to Candleford XXIII. An ash leaf with nine leaflets had to be searched for, and, when found, placed in the seekers bosom with the incantation: ‘Here’s an ash leaf with nine leaves on. Take it and press it to your heart аnd the first chap you meet’ll be your sweetheart. If he’s married let him pass by. If he’s single, let him draw nigh.’ [7, c. 230]

3) 1878 N&Q 5th ser. X 494. A pod with nine peas in it should always be hung on the handle of the front door of the house. The first dark man who passes through the door will marry one of the heiresses of the family. [7, c. 302]

4) 1952 Girl, 12 [Swansea, Glam.] Count nine stars nine nights running and wish. [7, c. 376]

Нарушение этого классического количества приводит к возникновению очень интересных фразеологизмов: the eleventh commandment, the eighth wonder of the world, the tenth Muse, etc.
